What is "Stonelyte" and where would I use it?
For years, people have been backlighting onyx with traditional fluorescent bulbs. Unfortunately, this has created added expenses in electrical wiring, constricted space due to bulky framing requirements, and uneven light distribution as a result of higher light concentration near the light bulb and darkening of stone between bulbs causing “light striping”.

As a new method, Stonelyte panels are produced by milling most standard stone down to a nominal thickness of 5/16” and directly laminating the stone material to a 5/16" thick optical acrylic backing panel for strength and bright, even light output.

The Stonelyte system is perfect for low impact areas such as full height backsplashes in kitchens and bathrooms, vanity tops, fireplace surrounds, decorative art niches, or even to turn a plain wall into a dramatic feature wall. To further enhance the stone, the lighting can be dimmed, colored, or cycled through several colors with a wall mounted adjustable dimmer switch.

With D & J’s on-site fabrication capabilities, custom shapes and cut outs are easy
Are there any special code or electrical requirements?
All of the electrical parts and power supplies are UL listed and conform to electrical codes. The panels are powered by a 12 Volt DC power adaptor for plug in power or transformers for hardwiring.
Do Stonelyte systems use a lot of electricity?
The LED lights used in the Stonelyte system are more energy efficient than incandescent or CFL bulbs, using 1/3rd the electricity of standard bulbs. The power consumption per LED is .25 watts compared to a 40 or 60 watt light bulb. With the money saved from installing this system versus standard under-counter lighting or recessed lighting, it could virtually pay for itself in a matter of years.
How long do the lights last?
The lifespan of the LED lights can be over 100,000 hours. Even if you reduce the average lifespan by half, and you enjoy your Stonelyte system an average of 6 hours per day, the LED lights would continue illuminating for about 22 years. Typically, design requirements and tastes change within the lifetime of the light system.
How do I change the light bulbs?
As explained in the Question above, the life expectancy of the LED bulbs is quite long; up to 45 years if used six hours each day.

Depending on the usage of Stonelyte, D&J can design the installation to accommodate removal of the stone for light replacement. The cost for this type of installation is based on the location and application.
What color/type of stone can I use with the backlight?
As with all natural stone, colors/shades vary from slab to slab. The amount of light that transfers through each stone is determined by the content of clear crystals and the translucent main body color. We will be more than happy to present a sample against backlighting for your approval prior to your final selection.

As a rule of thumb, most white and earth tone colored stones work best due to their high volume of clear crystals.
Can I use Stonelyte on floors or countertops?
Stonelyte can be used on almost all vertical surfaces. Stonelyte can also be used on horizontal surfaces; however due to the fragility of stones that are planed down to 5/16", we recommend using a 3/4" translucent material, such as Onyx, on countertops and flooring due to its durability and ability to transfer light without having to mill down the stone.
For wet areas or spills - is there any issues?
No. The LED lights are water resistant; however they are not waterproof and we do not recommend using them in areas of extreme water saturation (i.e. inside showers or inside tub surrounds).
Do the lights get hot or radiate any heat?
No, LED lighting is virtually heat free and is encased in a U.L. heat rated foil tape.
 What is the warranty period?
